恥ずかしながら、大映出身で独立後、東映などで何本も社会派サスペンスやメロドラマを撮った監督という表面的な知識しかなかった鈴木英夫の作品を初めてアテネフランセで見た。語りに必要な最低限の要素で、画面を作ってゆく経済性と、まどろっこしい説明は抜きで人物同士を偶然引き合わせ得てしまうご都合主義に貫かれたB級映画の精神は、まさしく40-50年代ハリウッドBノワールに連なる。また同じスコープの増村「黒の試走車」のテンションも思い出したりもするし、Joseｐｈ H Lewis の「Big Combo」の展開の速さを想起もする。しかし、増村との違いは緊張の汗をみせる男達がぎゅっと画面を占拠し、全篇そのテンションで走りきると言う密度の映画であったのに対し、この「社員無頼」は団令子や水野久美ら女性が、男達のテンションを異なる地平に誘導してゆく引力として介在している点。特に、後半突如、主人公サラリーマン・佐原健二がおでん屋台で出逢うコールガール水野久美（もちろん彼女が売春婦にみえるかどうかはの疑問はここではおく）はいい！唐突に現れ、佐原と上原謙、物語の力学を背負う二人の男を一挙に惹きつけてしまう。そんな強引な展開も、女優の輝きにおいて、つまり純映画的な引力によって納得させてしまう鈴木英夫の演出力にも惚れた。このレトロスペクティブは必見だ。
I have to admit that I’ve never seen Suzuki Hideo’s films before and just realized what a great series of films I have missed when I saw “Shain Burai -Dogo-hen-“(Salaryman Desert -Raging Roar-) , first part of the two episodes which depicts Sahara Kenji, a underdog salaryman rebelling against his company. The picture is just filled with the necessary elements for storytelling, and nothing else. Sometimes it even skips explanation and has characters meet/fight conveniently in visually magnificent fashion. In that way Suzuki fundamentally shares a lot in common with 40-50’s B noir. The film reminded me of “Big Combo” (Joseph H Lewis) with its rapid story development as well as “Black Test Car”(Yasuzo Masumura). The difference between Masumura and Suzuki is that “Black-” is purely driven by the tension between arguing men while Suzuki’s “Shain-” was intruded by female affection of Mizuno Kumi and Dan Reiko. Especially Mizuno Kumi, the beautiful femme fatal prostitute who all of sudden places herself in the focal center of the story after 60 minutes into the film, was supurb. Suzuki’s directing shines the actress stunningly, so we don’t really care the unrealistic storyline anymore.
