Arriving from Narita to Hong Kong in the early afternoon, I was driven to the downtown Konloon Island where the festival office and W hotel are located. Because of the world financial crisis, I heard, there are many sky scrapers built up to 80 story-high and then the construction have been halted in the middle. With the gray, cloudy sky as backdrop the landscape appeared futuristic-decadent.
First off I said high to Jacob Wang, the program director of HKIFF who chose DITV for his program. He told me it is a big year for Japanese films since Kurosawa-san won the best film of Asian Film Award with “Tokyo Sonata”. He showed me a Hollywood reporter on which I saw Kurosawa-san’s smily face. Then I had a quick meeting with Yu Lik Wai at a bar. He’s been shooting a horror film everyday now and Today was his only day off. We agreed that production design is very important for “Deja Vu Cities”, my next film.
Meeting with old NY friends, Hara Tomoko-san, her husband Peter, and Yuki Solemn Sakamoto-san, we went out to Mong Kok and eat a great seafood dinner in a shady tiny restaurant in backstreet. That was quite fun!
Cathey Pacific 機に乗り成田から香港に到着。九龍半島の海岸線に広がる高層マンションの密度に驚いた。世界不況の影響で、80階立てのビルが途中まで建設されて頓挫して放置されているものもあり、世紀末な雰囲気を漂わせている。昨年出来たばかりのW Hotel HKがフィルムメーカーの宿泊先であり、映画祭オフィスの拠点。”Deep in the Valley “を選出してくれたプログラマーJacob Wang に挨拶をする。昨日発表されたAsian Film Award に、Kurosawaの「Tokyo Sonata」が選ばれたよ、と知らせてくれた。Hollywood Reporter 誌に、ご満悦そうな黒沢さんの笑顔が。その後、Yu Lik Wai とW Hotel のバーで待ち合わせ、次作「Deja Vu Cities (仮題）」について話し合う。今、ホラー映画撮影の真っ最中だそうで、たまたま撮休の今日時間を空けて会いに来てくれた。私も先週使ったカメラRED ONE ４Kを2台使って撮影しているそうだ。Deja~の中国側プロダクションの手配の話をすると、Production Designer がとても大切だということになる。
この日は、対岸の香港島に行かずじまい。NY時代の友人Yuki Solemn Sakamotoさん、原朋子さんと旦那のPeterと九龍半島のダウンタウンMong Kokを冷やかし、朋子さん宅近隣の場末の海鮮料理屋で夕食。昨晩徹夜だったので、へとへとになった。
