Before the Asian premiere screening tomorrow I took care of a couple of meetings.
I attended a Lunchon gathering hosted by Jacob and HKIFF. Met with Yutaka Yamazaki, director (well known as DP of Koreeda and Kawase), and Makiko Watanabe, actress of “Torso.” It was going to be world premiered that night. Quite inetersting to hear how he separate his mind set as director from being a DP. (He shot the film by himself.) Then I went to the FILMART and met Karin Chen regarding the NY production of “Deja Vu Cities”. She suggested a few line producers. We also got excited to talk about A.O. Scott’s article on NY Times “Neo-Neo Realism.” We don’t 100% agree with his classification of the current wave of American Indie cinema. But I hope “Good Bye Solo”, a new film by my friend Ramin Bahrani, do have the successful first weekend from tomorrow.
After seeing “The Rainbow Troops”, Indonasian box hit, I went to a FILMART closing party in Lan Kwai Fong area. I very much look forward to the Asian Premiere screening tomorrow!
明日のアジアプレミア上映前に人とのミーティングの数々をこなす。
昼はディレクターのみが集うランチョン。今回、初監督作品「Torso」をワールドプレミアされる山崎裕さん、女優の渡辺真起子さんと同席。脚本、監督、撮影を全て一人でされたとのこと。いつもされている撮影監督と、初めての演出(監督）をどう切り離したのか、という話しで大いに盛り上がる。その後、初めて香港島に渡りFILMART （映画のマーケット）を見学。HAF（国際共同製作マーケット）に日本からは河瀬直美さんの作品などが出展されていた。NYのプロデューサーKarin Chen とミーティング。NYでの撮影の段取りを話す。また、昨今NYのインディーフィルム界を賑わしているNY Times の記事（”Neo-Neo Realism” by A.O.Scott) について、そのクラシフィケーションのおおざっぱさに憤り、大いに同意する。しかし、その記事で取り上げられた友人Ramin Bahrani の新作”Good Bye Solo”が今週から全米で公開するとのこと。本当に成功してくれればいいと思う。
なぜ呼ばれたのか分からない、いかにも中国的な社交行事パーティに顔を出した後、インドネシアのボックスオフィスヒット”The Rainbow Troops”、傑作でもなんでもないがウェルメイドで大いに泣かされた。その後、香港島の丘の上にあるLan Kwai Fong のPhilia’s Lounge でFILMART のクロージングパーティー。”Torso”の上映を終えたばかりの山崎さん、山形ドキュメンタリー映画祭の藤岡さんと歓談。明日のアジアプレミア上映が待ち遠しい。
